Great, you’re curious about planning a world trip. Discovering the planet and stopping wherever takes your fancy is the ultimate way of freedom. But planning a world trip can be a complex business. It is a time-consuming process, and for the first time world traveler, it can seem overwhelming. But if you follow these 8 Steps for planning a world trip, you can set your worries aside and be well prepared on your way to setting off on that trip of a lifetime. Here’s my guide to get you started

STEP 1: WHY A WORLD TRIP?

Once you finally take that leap and make the decision to make a world trip panic often sets in. You have a million questions you want answered. Slow down and realize that everything can and will fall into place. Step 1 takes you through the very beginning stages of planning your trip and sets the foundation for the rest of the planning process. This step takes you back to why you made this big decision and what your personal goals are making this world trip.

STEP 2: WHERE TO GO?

So I decided to stop making excuses and take the plunge to go on a world trip. So what now? The world is huge, and you want to see as much of it as you can. That’s what I naively thought. But so many things come into play when planning a world trip. There are some important factors to think about, like which destinations you’ll like, how long you want to stay, when, your travel pace, your budget and how to prioritize! Because in the beginning you’ll have a long list of the things you want to do. You’ll need to skip some great sites and experiences to stay within your budget and don’t get burned-out due to a fast travel pace.

STEP 3: WHEN to go?

So you set the countries you want to visit. Now you need to think about when to set off, where to start and for how long to plan your route. But when is the best time to set off? And which season? Depending on how big your world trip is and how many destinations you want to visit, it can be quite a puzzle to make a good planning. It’s important to do your research Because what if….. you want to climb the Machu Picchu, but when arriving you find out that due to the rain season the park is closed. You don’t want to miss out on something like that, do you? So this is why it’s important to check this and well plan your world trip.

STEP 4: ESTIMATE COSTS

One of the biggest questions about planning a world trip is: how much does it cost to travel around the world? This was the biggest thing that was holding me back to go on a world trip. It took some research to make a good estimated budget. I’ll share my research and preparation with you. To see how much the costs of a world trip actually is, you’ll need to wait at least two years to find out….when I’m back from my world trip :).

STEP 5: PRACTICAL MATTERS

I like sayings, so I can’t skip this subject without saying: the first blow is half the battle! This suits really well on this topic. The practical matters is not the most fun step of all seven, but there are some things you simply have to take care or thinking about before leaving – like visas, vaccinations, travel insurance and getting rid of your housing.

STEP 6: GEAR AND PACKING

We’ve done the practical matters in step 5, but another VERY practical matter is packing! What gear do you actually need for your trip? And what to pack it in? The golden rule is: packing less is (almost) always better. If you really need an item you left at home after you’re on the road, chances are you can rent it or buy it.

STEP 7: Getting Ready for Life on the Road

This steps helped me to het get ready for a life on the road. The final step had me thinking and preparing for life on the road. There were still a lot of questions in my head, unanswered. Like… how to stay healthy? How to get in shape? And how to stay safe? And do I need to learn another language?  And what is a good travel pace?

STEP 8: And go!

The most emotional step of all. First because you’re so excited. You’re finally taking your first step into that plane of your dream! But you also have to say goodbye to your family and friends. This is a moment where I felt some doubt. But I stopped myself from not following my dream: a world trip. So I did said my goodbyes and on the 20th of January 2022 I went to Canada.
